Not all girls like pink // a lego cape shirt
Sometimes we decide to adopt something as our favorite because it's not the same one the other person likes (that's how we all picked our favorite power ranger, right?). But I'm pretty sure that the reason this girl favors black and brown and "boy things" over pink princess everything like her sister is just because she likes those colors.
So when she requested a brown and black lego cape shirt for Christmas, I was so totally not surprised.
Boom. Done. Flashback skinny tee in a black and tan stripe from Finch sewing studio. Cape fabric was a leftover piece from an as-of-yet super secret project (You're curious now, right? I'll share as soon as I can *snicker*). The minifig head is a piece of terry knit that's also a scrap from my secret project. I interfaced it and hastily stenciled on a fabric paint face.
Working in the dark after my kid with separation anxiety falls asleep on the couch with her daddy, while he plays Lego Harry Potter video games....not my favorite.
Such an animal lover, this girl.
There's a special feeling you get while you're making something for somebody that you know they're really going to love. In this case, I got to make her something custom to order. Pretty cool. There are other requests I haven't fulfilled yet. Like the one for a shirt with a hood that has a big stuffed bird on the top like her Lego Tonto. Girl......
She's also asked several times for a black shirt that has a hood that's a ninja mask. Might be doable.
I guess I'm starting to learn how to combine my desire to sew clothes with the particular things that make clothes enjoyable for my kids. There's satisfaction in making things that come bursting out of my own head, exactly how I want them. But there's also satisfaction in making something that these girls will dig around in their dresser for.
In this case, I loved making it just like it is. When it's time to sew dresses or skirts that Clover will wear, things get a bit murkier.
Two more Christmas projects coming up soon!
Oh she's adorable! It is so so great when they have those things that they dig around in their dresser for isn't it! For Henry it's his "fancy pants leggings" he literally doesn't want to wear anything else but them!! It's torture trying to get him to wear regular pants for like Christmas eve church or when it's cold out or we are going hiking! He will wear pants that I made him but only after much much discussion (begging) and only those that I made last fall...which means those are too short! So far we haven't had any issues with shirts...except for that awesome deer bimaa i made that has yet to be worn... :( Seriously...we should attempt to get Violet and Henry together again, i'm interested to see how they will interact ;)
ReplyDeleteShe is so cute and I love her little brain for liking black and brown, too! O says his favorite color is black, which cracks me up. They could be such good buddies...
ReplyDeletelittle girls like yours makes me feel happy!
ReplyDeleteLove how happy she looks! How great to get a crazy specific request and be able to make it happen! I also like the idea of a terry cloth applique...cozy. I think the bimaa pattern could be finagled for a shirt with a ninja mask. My older daughter asked for that exact thing, a ninja shirt after seeing her little sisters bimaa with the cowl up over her face. So if you figure that out, do share :)
ReplyDeleteLove this shirt and love her. Hendrix's favorite color is "black and white." And Elsie's is green. He even tries to argue and tell her hers is pink but she won't have it :)
ReplyDeleteShe really looks happy in it! I used such a same head on a shirt a while ago, a gift for my friend's son's 5th birthday. As soon as he got it in the mail he put it on and insisted on wearing it on his birthday, as well as on his party. I guess there's something about Lego that really nails it for some kids :-)

She's awesome. I love a girl who'll row her own boat!
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic- she obviously loves it. I too find insurmountable pleasure from sewing up exactly what I want/what's in my head...but I guess we gotta please those littles once in a while too, eh?
ReplyDeleteYour daughter is kinda my hero - is that weird? Haha, actually, you're my hero - you seem to be raising some awesome children, nice job! Love the cape shirt. I'm thinking Yuki needs one now too.
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog, via @kidsclothesweek on Instagram. Love the LEGO minifig head shirt! My son would love that. Also, I, too, have a daughter named Clover! We haven't met another one, yet (she's 18 months) but people loooove her name (as do we!)
