Recently, my friend Shannon who has the blog luvinthemommyhood
was very sweet and offered to let me pattern test her new creation called the
"sweetheart dress"
Clover is head over heels for this dress. She asks to wear it all the time. I made mine from some organic geo grand, and some leftover gray kona cotton. At first the skirt was made with chambray, but I was dumb and cut my fabric off grain. I decided to go ahead and sew it up anyway, hoping it would turn out ok, but I HATED the way it was laying. So I spent an evening carefully picking it out of the bodice. There wasn't enough of the geo grand left to make the skirt, so I color blocked the gray on there. I kinda love how that turned out!
The bodice is fully lined, and it has a full skirt for those moments when you need to feel princessy. The real kicker is the back though.....
That's right. A heart cutout! There is something really delightful about being able to see Clover's tiny little back. I haven't ever seen something like it before, and I have to say that I overhear people saying how cute it is when we are out. The button loop she recommends in the pattern is really sweet too. I've never made one before, but I definitely will again. There was actually supposed to be one on the croquet dress, but I couldn't find the instructions on the O+S website, so I provisionally put in a lame embroidery thread loop that is falling apart.
The pattern comes with measurement guides, and like usual Clover was smaller around than a 2T, but tall enough for a 4T. Blending the 2 and 4 turned out great. One nice thing about the pattern is that there is no taping, and very few pieces to print out. Her instructions are great too, and there are photos and diagrams to help you along in the process.
Clover is always telling me she feels pretty in her sweetheart dress, so I know there will be more of these in the future! Because of the simple bodice design, there is plenty of room for customization too, so I might get brave and tinker with things to vary up things a bit.
