cowardly lion costume - KCW day 2&3

cowardly lion

Recently, I read the Wonderful Wizard of Oz to the kids, and the Halloween costume ideas were hatched out of that. Next on my list is some sweet Dorothy costumage.

Violet seems like the kind of person who needs ridiculous, furry head gear, so she's our lion. Somehow I wound up with an outfit that reminds me more of a llama, or a kitten when I'm being more generous with my assessment. Still, seeing my sweet, ferocious little Violet in this outfit makes me all giggly.

On the top, we have the Oliver and S cozy winter hood sewn up in super fluffy faux fur and lined in jersey. My sewing machine plowed through like 5 or 6 layers of this stuff at once without a problem. That's the power of german engineering!

I added a chin strap to the pattern and a button and elastic closure

On the bottom is a pair of Titchy Threads fancypants leggings in a 24m size. The white colorblocking wasn't so much a creative decision as a make it work moment. The yellow stuff ran out so I folded up the end of the leg pattern piece to cut it off at the shin, traced the folded bottom bit on the white fabric, added seam allowance, and sewed it all together.

This is my second pair of these leggings and I really like the pattern.

The shirt is a Lou Bee Bimaa sweater with just a neckband rather than the fun necklines the pattern offers. I wanted the very slim shape but didn't have enough fabric for a shawl collar. Plus I was scared violet wouldn't wear it.

I have to say, I kind of love the stencil on this. Jacquard black went on first and as a second layer I added their lumiere copper. It's shimmery and a dark red orange.

I was going to build a tail into her leggings but then decided against that. Separate pieces means she can wear the leggings with all her other clothes. Clover will like dressing up with a tail too. I made it with yellow linen, fleece, and faux fur. The tail tube is stuffed with fabric scraps from the shirt. lol.  Were I to do it again I'd make the belt slimmer.

Violet feels pretty rad in her costume. She's been prowling about the house all morning.

This girl doesn't have much cowardice in her. Guess she's the lion after he's gotten his courage.

......this is definitely a lot of yellow

The rest of kcw will be devoted to making dorothy stuff. I had hoped to get some tutus done too but that ain't happening.

  3. dude!!! i love it!! I searched all over jo ann yesterday looking for the right fur for a sabre toothed tiger and came up empty...i did find some awesome tiger stripey, but sabre toothed aren't or weren't striped very much...so now what,...hmmm...my plan is the exact same as yours though..haha...bimaa shaw collar, o+s hood and fancy pants....all perfect patterns for animals, right!? I was sort of hoping that we would all go as wizard of oz this year...but the kiddos weren't going for it, another year perhaps. I haven't decided what I am going to dress like this year, perhaps robin to V's batgirl? or cat woman, but that's a bit cliche and i am totally not sexy enough for her ;) violet is sooooooo adorable!
