Debbie's Birthday Dress - Kids clothes week

Kids Clothes Week lives on yet another day in my house! Also, no baby yet. If that wasn't obvious. 

 

Hey, the stars finally aligned for this girl getting photographed. Clover had something made for her, would wear it, was well enough to not have a red snot mustache, and agreed to willingly model.  

She's in something that I had almost finished a while ago and finally got done with today for kids clothes week. It counts. Not going into mega-detail about this because I have a blog tour coming up next month for this yet-to-be-released pattern by Sewpony

 

My first peter pan collar, plus the silhouette of the dress got a "Hello Sally Draper" comment out of my husband as he took a glance at Clover in her new dress. Yeah! Yeah, for the era at least.....Sally Draper is kind of a little jerk a lot of the time.  But one of the things I liked about this pattern was the 50's era kid vibe.

 

Clover chose this Cloud 9 print from joanns. I was desperate for something to do this pattern test with, and couldn't find a single suitable garment fabric there that I could stand the sight of. I was envisioning a somewhat structured fabric in a mint green, gray, red-orange or herringbone. No luck. So we wound up in the quilting cotton section where a minor disagreement over this vs an Alexander Henry print happened. 

Clover won. I decided that if I didn't want to use quilting cotton anyway, and it's her dress, she gets to pick the fabric. Not that I don't think this print is great, which it totally is. It's just that the drape leaves a lot to be desired for me.

Miss chicken legs here is tall, and the dress wound up somewhere in "almost tunic/too short for dress" territory. It took me until today to put an extra band of fabric (Essex linen again. So great!) around the bottom. Now it's longer than I wanted, but at least there's room for chicken legs to get taller. 

Clover doesn't model for me very often. But when she does she gets very serious about it. I think she's been flipping through too many of my Vogue magazines. 

 

Will there be more sewing this week? I don't know. Nothing else is begging to be made at the moment, though there are several great fabrics sitting in a pile that need to be assigned a duty pretty quickly.
