big little skirt

Clover has been under the weather since Tuesday. Same thing that seemed to come and go over the weekend, leave totally on Monday, only to come back again the next day. Seeing your normally wild and crazy girl just moan and groan and lay on the couch all day is unnerving. You spend most days wishing they would just calm down, but as soon as your kids start acting unlike themselves because they don't feel well, you start praying for them to come back to life.

My 4 year old is also in a stage where she refuses to wear pants, unless by "pants" you mean leggings under a skirt. Preferably her big purple skirt that goes to her toes and drags in the dirt and rain every time it goes outside. And she doesn't want to wear her dresses because the "shoulders are cold", by which she means "if it's not long sleeved, I'm not wearing it. And a sweater over it doesn't count". So what we need right now are an abundance of long sleeved tees, skirts, and leggings.

So to satisfy the need for skirts, and to try perking my little limp noodle of a girl up, I put together a fresh skirt for her to wear. It didn't really help. But at least she'll have something to hopefully enjoy when she's back to normal.

I sorta did the simple skirt from Dana, but added a separate waist band and gathered the skirt pieces. Because things can never just be easy and simple in my world, apparently.

I also added shirred pockets for Clover to lug her treasures around in. I've heard "where are the pockets in this thing?" enough times to know not to give her a pocketless skirt anymore.

Clover would prefer big poofy Disney princess skirts 24/7, which are fine for dress-up but pretty impractical for everyday life. Watching her trip going up stairs over and over because her skirt is so long is not my favorite. Listening to her howl every time the hem dips into a puddle....also not my favorite. So I tried to make this long-ish without being super long, and then double layered it for some extra oomph.

The skirt owner is obviously not in the mood for photos, but when I found this little stinker avoiding getting her pajamas on by running away in her sister's skirt, I said "hey, let me take your picture, chicken butt!"

Clover is a lot taller than Violet so the skirt is super big on her.

But like everything else in life, Violet owns it.

My fabrics are Amy Butler Lark and some crappy denim from JoAnn that I won't be making jeans out of again. Yes, I just gave my future homeschooler a denim skirt. But it's not REALLY a denim skirt, is it?

  2. Aw Violet and her poor little banged up face. I love your kids - this skirt is so cute and I hope Clover feels better soon! Have you ever made a circle skirt? Can't think if you have, but they're major girly girl pleasers. Check out Cherie's reversible circle skirt tutorial. ANYWAY. No, not really a denim skirt, nope.
