Violet turns two (plus some birthday crafts)

Today, our baby of the family turned two. Everyone who ever had a baby turn two knows exactly how crazy it feels. 

This little girl has been such a blessing to us. Her sweet affectionate personality, paired with her wild animal behavior make her quite the character to have around. She is both crazy and free spirited, and very snuggly and dependent. When she's not acting wild, she is making me carry her around while she pats me on the back, kisses me, tells me she loves me, and asks to nurse. Yep. Still nursing my two year old.

 

Since Clover would have felt cast out and abandoned if she didn't get a birthday crown, I made one for each of the girls. I used some Alexander Henry market floral (which crazily enough I found in Joanns, which was totally unexpected) that I picked out last minute. After digging through all of my stuff I couldn't find anything that said "birthday crown" to me, so I dragged the kids out to Joanns. 

It took me way too long to decide on something, then finally I saw this print. Then I FELT it and zipped off to the cutting counter. The label called it "sheeting" and it has the most amazing feel to it. It wasn't until I was having it cut that I noticed the selvedge said Alexander Henry.

I also grabbed a pack of dusty teal rickrack to liven the crowns up, and I backed them with some really thick gray uncut corduroy that I already had. That plus two layers of pellon shapeflex interfacing makes for a perfectly soft but sturdy crown.  I will probably end up doing what I intended to do before, and get some good shots of the crowns on their own, with more detail. That will just have to come later.

 

And of course there is the Lego shirt. It's actually called an "Omi" shirt to Violet, since she  has been calling Lego men "omi's" since she could talk. It all started when she was trying to say "helmet" because she liked the motorcycle helmet on this Lego guy we had. Helmet sounded like omi, and then all of the Legos ended up being "omi" to her. Just one of those kid things that infects the whole family. 

I used the Figgy's Banyan pattern for the tee, and made it out of the same slub organic knit as Clover's triangle shirt. For the pattern, I wanted something fitted for her tiny little body, so I traced out the 18 month sized girl's tee, but not with the handkerchief section since I didn't want to use too much fabric, but I wanted the fitted shoulders in the handkerchief version. I just used the regular tee pattern as a guide for cutting the bottom half of it. The lego head really needs another application of fabric paint, because I was in a rush to get it done before she woke from a nap. But it will work for now.  

We went out to raise some birthday hooplah this morning before we had to do errands and finish getting ready for her little birthday party tonight. 

 

 

Sweet joy. 

Isn't that face just charming? Clover was screaming at me angrily to "stop taking my picture! push me!!!" *sigh* After that attitude, I stopped taking her picture. I also stopped pushing her and walked away. Lol.

I've got a bunch more photos that I need to upload and sort through now that we've had cupcakes and opened gifts. Clover was completely insane today with rabid excitement about Violet's birthday. She was repeatedly announcing "happy birthday, Coco and Violet!" and bouncing off the walls. My nerves! Time for my Friday wine.
